Literacy Skills for 6-1/LaBarbera, January 20-26, 2010
1. We are covering the following skills: Inferential comprehension, character motivation, figurative language, and identifying words within context. The students continue to receive instruction on these skills, often missed on the ISAT. We will apply these skills to our novels , short stories, and short passages covered in class.
2. There is an extended response due on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
The prompt is: Analyze the main character in the current novel you are reading. If you are reading your biography, then answer the question: What motivated the person you are reading about to succeed? Was it money? Was it power? Was it frustration with poverty? What was it? Explain thoroughly. Refer to the student-friendly rubric.
3. Up and coming: We will be reading mysteries in the next novel unit.
Some of the novel options are: Shakespeare's Secrets, And Then There Were None, and The Westing Game. More information to follow.
4. Students are reminded to turn in late work by this Friday, Jan. 22 in order to be scored and recorded before the progress reports are distributed on Jan. 28.
