Literacy Skills for 6-1 LaBarbera/Jan. 27- Feb. 2, 2010.

1. Students should be reading AR books and self selection this week. We will have the introduction to vocabulary for the genre of "mystery" in class.
Up and coming: We will read And Then There Was None Or Shakespeare's Secrets, Or The Westing Game.

2. Extended response: There is an extended response due every Monday until ISATs . This was announced right after winter break.
This week's prompt: If the main character of your novel was to be "lost" , how would the character solve that problem? How would YOU solve that problem. Share an example.
3. The progress reports will go home with students this Thursday, Jan. 28. The second trimester ends February 26.

Language Arts for 6-1/LaBarbera/Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2010.

1. For tonight: Tuesday, Jan. 26--Complete the worksheet #172 covering figurative language.
We will work on poetry collection one in Literature text in class.
2. For the week: Work on the adventure story. Match up the story elements with the plot diagram and story structure you completed last week. The first half of the story ( characters, setting, and problem) should be completed by this Friday, Jan. 29. Extensions are offered .
3. Up and coming: Determine your research paper topic. Develop 5 questions with the topic embedded in the question.... due Feb. 5 so that we have it for Feb. 8 class with Ms. Nelson, Teacher-Librarian at Brooks . Ms. LaBarbera calls that the topic of any student's research paper may not change after one full week working on it.
Topic suggestions: science: photosynthesis, germination, respiration, plants, and growth cycles, insects and metamorphosis, microbes and bacteria, algae; effects of drugs on cells, specific disease ( diagnosis, symptoms, cause, treatment, research); The Arts; history of ballet,jazz, timeline of history of a genre of music, ; modern advertising; history of technology ie,computers; automobile history, sports injuries, sports history, history of theater; History---A specific battle in a war; effects of Presidential leadership or effects of any leader's reign on the development or lack thereof in any country; no biographies, pop culture issues; environmental issues, global warming, oceans ; history of fashion, cosmetics, brain research, dreams, illlusions; the human eye-functions, etc, ; history of education/ segregation, integration.
This project will be differentiated. The number of sources, the complexity of the topic, the length of the paper , the due dates will be impacted.
For Monday, Feb. 8---Students will work on a search terms sheet in the library. Students will learn how to fill in source cards and use an encyclopedia index. At least one print source ( book, periodical, reference book) must be cited before using the computers.

Students need supplies : note cards, spiral notebook, clear plastic folder, pens, pencils, post it notes, envelope to carry note cards, paper for the final draft, and access to a computer and printer.

1. Final typed drafts of persuasive composition #2 are due Friday, January 22.
If a student has been absent , an extension is given aligned with the number of days the student was absent.

2. For Wednesday, Jan. 20 homework: Begin the plan to your adventure story using the graphic organizer that was given to you in class today. Refer to the plot diagram and follow the map as you begin to write the story. Due : January 22---The plan for the story is due this Friday.
Students have notes in their language arts spirals about the adventure story: This is a "short" story. We are focusing on basic story elements for story writing. Recommended but not mandated: Include at least 3 characters, 2 settings, and one problem. Demonstrate in your writing the elements of " rising action ( 3 events) , climax ( high point of the story), and falling action ( 3 events ) leading to the resolution or solution to the problem.
Since we have completed 2 narrative and 2 persuasive compositions , veering toward expository writing, the students are eager to write creatively before we plunge into our research paper project in February.
Due: Jan. 25-29----The first half of the written draft of the story should be completed by next Friday.
Due: Feb. 1-4---Complete writing the story. Peer editing will take place in class.
Due: Feb. 5-10---Final typed draft of the adventure story. Extensions are granted per parent request.

3. RESEARCH PAPER ..... PROJECT..... up and coming.
a) Supplies needed: a pack of 4 by 6" index cards, a clear plastic folder, a spiral or composition notebook for the written draft, and reserve the computer and printer you will use for the final typed draft that will be due in mid March.
b. Start writing topic ideas from Science, History, Pop Culture, the Arts, Geography, Environmental issues. Write 5 topics of your interest. Circle the one topic that " fires up" your motivation for the project. Select one topic by Feb. 5. Ms. Nelson, our teacher-librarian at Brooks will guide students through the research process. Ms. LaBarbera will guide students through the writing process.

4. Figurative language will be covered in the pilot text, Literature. We will be covering several units . A final benchmark test will be administered for this book during the middle of May.

Literacy Skills for 6-1/LaBarbera, January 20-26, 2010

1. We are covering the following skills: Inferential comprehension, character motivation, figurative language, and identifying words within context. The students continue to receive instruction on these skills, often missed on the ISAT. We will apply these skills to our novels , short stories, and short passages covered in class.
2. There is an extended response due on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
The prompt is: Analyze the main character in the current novel you are reading. If you are reading your biography, then answer the question: What motivated the person you are reading about to succeed? Was it money? Was it power? Was it frustration with poverty? What was it? Explain thoroughly. Refer to the student-friendly rubric.
3. Up and coming: We will be reading mysteries in the next novel unit.
Some of the novel options are: Shakespeare's Secrets, And Then There Were None, and The Westing Game. More information to follow.
4. Students are reminded to turn in late work by this Friday, Jan. 22 in order to be scored and recorded before the progress reports are distributed on Jan. 28.

Literacy Skills for Jan. 11-Jan. 19 , 2010--6-1

Literacy Skills for January 11 -Jan. 2010 for 6-1

1. This week several students began a 3 week lit. skills course with Ms. Pietrzak, a Differentiation Coordinator. A second group will have this experience in February.

2. A one paragraph summary of the significance of the person who is being read about for the biography report was due Jan 11. The biography report of critical thinking is due Feb. 23.

3. There is an extended response due Tuesday, Jan. 19. The question is: How do you "connect" with the main character in the novel you are currently reading? Biography? AR book? Historical fiction novel? Describe the similarities and differences. Refer to the student-friendly rubric for extended responses. ( We will have an extended response prompt for the next 7 weeks ----one per week... until March 2... ISAT week. We will discuss responses and revise to bring them to 4 points.... if they are not already.

4. Students are reminded to take an AR test when they complete reading a novel in class or from the AR cart.
5. Projects are due this Friday... Three--- Tic Tac Toe projects are due and one will be presented in class.

January 11-19, 2010/Language Arts, 6-1

Language Arts for January 11-19, 2010.

1. For this week: Complete the written draft of persuasive composition number 2 . Conference with at least 2 classmates . Check one another's draft for content, punctuation, spelling, paragraphing, capitalization...... Everything!!
Due Friday, Jan. 15: First typed draft with the written draft, plan, and braindrops sheet.
The final typed draft is due Jan. 22..... and extensions are possible for those who have been absent or need some assistance with the draft.

2. For Thursday, Jan. 14-----Quiz on another set of homonym pairs from the original packet. You also have 2 worksheets with additional homonyms. Study! The quiz will cover What is an adjective? What is an adverb? Which are the words that are modified???? This is a quiz instead of test because we have found that these parts of speech are relatively new to the majority of the classes. We will see the scores of this quiz, reteach , and test when there is greater than 80 percent mastery by all students. (to be announced.).

3. When you complete your persuasive composition number two.. you will receive information and lessons will be taught about organizing an adventure story. The short story will include at least three characters, a vivid setting, a problem...and then 3 significant events ( rising action)... with a high point ( climax)... followed by falling action of 3 events leading to the conclusion/solution. Do not rush this assignment. It may be worked on in school and at home. If you want to submit this story to the District 97 Writing Celebration, it is due Jan. 22. For a grade, the final draft will be due in February..... The due date will be announced in class. We need instruction on skills, grammar, story elements, etc.,so it is too early to announce the due date.

4. We will put the advertisement activity on " hold"for a bit, as I am focusing on the Illinois Learning Standards and goals in preparation for the March ISATs. Some skills require reteaching. I will be covering skills and concepts in class with all of the Language Arts classes. It is essential that students bring their spiral notebooks and a writing tool to every class.

5. Up and coming is the Research Paper Project. The project consumes approximately 7 weeks of Language Arts classes . We will be working with our teacher - librarian, Ms. Nelson beginning Feb. 8 and for 3 weeks. The students will need a pack of notecards , four inches by six inches..... They will need a spiral or composition notebook , a clear plastic folder..... and access to a computer and printer for the final draft, due in March. Each week, there will be a piece of the project due and graded. I will be teaching paraphrasing, outlining, and organizing the paper in the classroom to all four Language Arts classes. Parents will be kept informed of the status of the paper. Please communicate through email with questions.
